Pic of the day

The pic of the day is available at nationalgeographic.com or earthshots.com

Follow this link:  Nat Geo  and look on the right hand side to see the pic of the day.  Mrs. Haller will sometimes refer to these photos in her lectures.

The Earthshots.com link is a little more nebulous but there are lots of fabulous shots there too.

September 9

We connected with the other schools today and covered off the mechanics of composition for photography.  Check out the information on building a collection of stock photos.  Don't forget that you must create a photo file on Dropbox to make your files easily accessible.  Also, get that shared file called SD74 Digital Media (name) going and add Mrs. Haller (bhallerbc@gmail.com) and Ms.Jones (caraleej71@gmail.com) as subscribers to your folder.  That way we can check your work.

Friday Mrs. Haller will be doing an in-depth lesson on aperture (f-stop) and depth of field.  It's tricky, so don't miss that day.

Ciao!

Places to find online images for free - creating a digital photo file

The following websites are full of images that you may use for you own purposes.  Remember to check to see if the images are royalty free and that the individual images are free for use.  Some sites offer images that are free as well as images that you must pay for their use.  If an image is copywritten, you cannot use that image.  Pay attention to what you can and cannot use.

Remember the rules of photo composition that you are focusing on. They are:  (leading)lines; the rule of thirds; filling the frame; framing the subject; using unusual angles/viewpoints; depth of field (aperture); and symmetry/texture.  If you are struggling with these terms, then let Ms. Jones know so she can review them with you.

You can also view this powerpoint project:

Instagram: how to...

Watch this short youtube.com video to learn how to make an Instagram account.

How to add people:

1. Click the 'explore' icon.  It looks sort of like a star and is located next to the home button.
2.  Enter the user name of someone who is using Instagram.  For example, justastream.  This is Mrs. Haller's Instagram and you must add her.  When her name pops up on your device, tap it or press enter or do what your device prompts you to do.
3.  When the specified person's page pops up, press "follow"

Please add Mrs. Haller - justastream  and Ms. Jones - snaphappyjones

How to follow hash tags:

Follow the directions above except add the hash tag like this: #cats

When posting photos, please add the hash tag #digitalmediasd74 along with your other hash tags.

Cheers!

How to upload a photo to Dropbox

To upload photos to Dropbox, follow these simple steps:

1.  Sign in to Dropbox.
2.  In the upper right hand corner fine the icon that looks like a page with an arrow over it.Click the icon.  It will bring up another window and ask you to 'choose files'.  Mouse over the box and click.
3.  Choose the location from which to upload your image(s) be it from your camera or from a folder.
4. Select image(s).  By holding the 'crntl' key and pressing the 'a' key, you can select all of your images at once.  To select images one at a time, you will be prompted to choose files.  To select only certain images, you hold the 'cntrl' key and 'alt' down simultaneously and use the mouse to select the images to be uploaded. Once the images are selected, you can hit enter and they will be uploaded.

You can directly upload to a file on Dropbox or you can upload to the system and then sort photos into files. You can even not use a file system, but I don't recommend that.

Happy uploading.

Creating and sharing files Dropbox

Creating a folder

1.  Sign in to Dropbox.
2.  In the upper right hand corner of your dropbox homepage, mouse over the icons.  One icon will have a file that has a plus (+) sign on it.  Click that icon.  It will pop up a page and ask you to name the folder.
3.  Once the folder is named, hit return.  Voila! Your file will appear on your homepage in alphabetical order!

Creating and sharing a folder at the same time

1.  Sign in to Dropbox.
2.  Next to the 'add folder' icon, there is an icon with a rainbow over the folder.
3.  Click the icon, a box will appear with two options.  If you have a folder created, then click the appropriate button.  If not, then click the button over 'create and share'.
4.  Fill the text box with the name "Digital Media Sd74". Click the 'next' button.
5. You will be prompted to enter email addresses.  Enter: caraleej71@gmail.com  and bhallerbc@gmail.com .  If you successfully shared a file, you will see a blue folder with two people figures on it.

Keep in mind that what you put in your Digital Media folder is visible by all people whom you share that folder.  You can allow people added to your folder to add others or not.

Nice work!  You did it.  :)
